Veggie Tales
For religious reasons, I once fasted meat, fish, and poultry for about two weeks. Although I tried to focus on a higher power, my power was drained from my body. I felt tired, had headaches, and wasn’t in the best of moods, especially when my coworker beside me heated up his home cooked meals at lunch time. Before the fast, I thought about going cold turkey and trading in meats for fruits and veggies and pastas and breads. I later dropped that idea when my mother visited and barbequed pork ribs and stuffed salmons. Perhaps I’ll be a meat reducer, like one of my fellow GIS: Get in Shape! participants. I believe in moderation when it comes to a healthy diet. Fortunately, I don’t have too many cravings and don’t mind mixing up the menu from time to time. I checked in with Bethany Smith, the Community Dietician and Nutritionist at the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority, to find out if vegatarians are indeed healthier than meat eaters. I also wanted to know what one thing vegetarians and vegans should include in their diet to keep up their energy levels.
