GIS: Get in Shape!
GIS staff members are on a mission to Get in Shape! On Friday (18 September), the competition weighed in at the Health Services Authority. Nurses measured everything from waistlines and cholesterol levels to blood glucose and blood pressure. Some people were shocked to see the numbers on the scale and questioned if it was callipered correctly. High blood pressure and high cholesterol results had some concerned about not only fitting into the clothes in their closets. They worried whether they were at risk of developing something much more serious. The great thing about the group was everyone set their own personal goal. We were driven yet realistic. We wanted to make sure small changes led to the big picture: maintaining a healthier lifestyle. Some desired to drink more water or eat more vegetables. Others hoped to shed stubborn stomach fat or set better examples for their children. Me personally, I want to stop saying, “Before I came to Cayman, I weighed blank.” I want to take personal accountability for the weight I’ve gain over the years. I can’t blame my age. Although my metabolism slowed down, I’ve interviewed senior citizens who get up and exercise everyday. You can watch the video above about a couple who swims daily at Seven Mile Public Beach. So when I say, I’m getting old and don’t have the energy, I picture them doggie paddling along the coastline and enjoying life at every age.
