Zumba!!!!

Submitted by Heather on Tue, 2009-09-29 15:26

Zumba is the latest exercise craze sweeping the nation. It combines Latin dances with salsa and meringue music, instead of your typical techo type recordings blasting at the gym. I’m not surprised Caymanians and other West Indians are “ditching the workout, and joining the party!” (That’s the Zumba sloganJ) Several gyms on the island have added the class, opps..rather the party, to their schedules. Fellow GIS: Get in Shape participant Kenisha Morgan and I, along with videographer, Greg Parashak shook our grove thangs and burned a few calories.

Veggie Tales

Submitted by Heather on Tue, 2009-09-29 15:25

For religious reasons, I once fasted meat, fish, and poultry for about two weeks. Although I tried to focus on a higher power, my power was drained from my body. I felt tired, had headaches, and wasn’t in the best of moods, especially when my coworker beside me heated up his home cooked meals at lunch time. Before the fast, I thought about going cold turkey and trading in meats for fruits and veggies and pastas and breads. I later dropped that idea when my mother visited and barbequed pork ribs and stuffed salmons. Perhaps I’ll be a meat reducer, like one of my fellow GIS: Get in Shape!

Balancing Act

Submitted by Heather on Tue, 2009-09-29 15:24

I recently read an article about how your diet dramatically affects your weight. So despite hours on the treadmill, you may not go anywhere on the road to weight loss. When some people embark on that journey, they tend to eliminate entire food groups. For instance, a few years ago, everyone cut carbs. One of my aunts drank her breakfast and lunch and ate only a sensible dinner; and a close friend ate cereal twice a day. And a coworker (He’ll be anonymous, but he knows who he is!) told me he inhaled only raw vegetables once. He says he spent more time in the bathroom than in the office!

About Get In Shape

Do you want to lose weight, eat right, and feel better inside and out? If so, tune into GIS: Get in Shape! The new health and fitness series debuts on GIS Spotlight, starting in October 2009.

For three months, Host Heather Hopson, along with nearly a dozen coworkers, will team up with the Health Services Authority. HSA staff will teach participants how to not only shed pounds, but keep the weight off. They’ll also show them how diets don’t work, but meal planning and label reading never fails.
